Veteran’s Day November 11:  Local military veterans will be holding services and other events this week to commemorate Veterans Day. The holiday, originally called Armistice Day, was created to honor veterans of World War I.         While in college at University of Scranton I wrote my senior class project on my grandfather Albert Louis Vercammen who fought in WWI against the German army with the Belgian Army. Al Vercammen in Korean War           Decades after WWI, the Red Chinese stormed into North Korea in the Korean War and threatened Communism throughout Asia. The Army summoned my dad, Albert P. Vercammen, to go over and fight the invaders. He was on a Navy troop carrier crossing the Pacific when the North Koreans and Chinese heard about the fierce Vercammen fighting spirit. The North Koreans started to retreat and wanted to surrender. The cowardly United Nations let them call it a truce. Again, the world was safe for democracy.   While in Korea, my father Al Vercammen was promoted to Staff Sergeant. I recall him saying Korea was the coldest place in the world. Also, unlike the TV show MASH that had hot nurses, the ones in Korea were not attractive. The black and white photos taken in Korea my Dad show barren hills near their Spartan tents. It looked cold. I am glad I did not have to go over there. So as Americans, we thank our Dads and other vets that got the call to duty [draft] and helped turn the tide against the Communists.  My father was fortunate to be in the Army since he was able to attend college on the GI Bill at Newark College of Engineering, now NJIT. After drafted he went by train to basic training near Indianapolis. The Division was called the Dixie Brigade, and played the Dixie song when new recruits arrived. Basic training was like Officer & Gentleman Movie and Full Metal Jacket. He said for 16 weeks a Drill Sergeant yelled at everything.  At end of basic training they received weekend pass before they would leave for Korea from Spokane . He decided to take the train back to Jersey City to see his parents. Knowing they would miss the train to the west coast Al and other Army buddies paid their way to fly to Spokane to make the ship to Korea. My late father in law John Bachenski served in WWII in the Army Air Corp, the forerunner of the Air Force. He helped start the sonar radar program for the Army. He successfully helped defend the air base at Boca Raton, Florida from any German U boats or invading   I always stand for the National Anthem to honor veterans and those who served. Numerous events to honor veterans will be held across NJ and the USA. 3. Veterans and Sons/Grandsons of Veterans should join the American Legion    To honor my Dad and other veterans I joined the Sons of American Legion. I am a Member of Sons of American Legion, Edison Father & Son Post 435, which is located on 43 Oakland Ave, Edison, NJ 08817 near Plainfield Ave and Wick Plaza.  Eligible veterans would be able to provide a Form DD214 (or similar) to verify their eligibility. If you don’t meet these requirements, you can still support the USA and Posts of the American Legion. It’s possible that you may be able to join one of the other organizations in the “Legion Family.” The Sons of The American Legion (SAL) is comprised of male descendants, adopted sons and stepsons of American Legion members. (There are no age limitations.) Many posts have an active SAL program and you can contact one near you to learn more. (Visit www.legion.org/sons for more information.) Their sister organization is the American Legion Auxiliary. Eligibility is open to mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, granddaughters, great granddaughters, or grandmothers of members of The American Legion, or of deceased veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces during the listed war eras. We try to be practical. An executor is the person responsible for gathering all your assets upon your death, paying off your debts as appropriate, and distributing your assets according to your wishes. Executors are fiduciaries who have a legal duty to act in the best interest of the beneficiaries of the estate. Don’t confuse an executor with a successor trustee. If you have only a will that spells out your wishes for your estate, the person responsible for gathering and distributing your assets is called the executor. This person is named in your will and can serve with or without bond. Depending on the value of your estate and the laws of your state, it’s very likely the executor will serve under court supervision since wills are commonly handled through the probate process. Availability Your choice for executor must, first and foremost, be available. This means your executor must be able, willing, and local(ish). Ability to serve means your choice for executor must have the capacity to serve in both a legal as well as a personal capacity. Try not to choose a contemporary of yours. Instead, pick someone who’s younger than you by at least a decade. Also, if your most trusted friend is your first choice, but they have a complicated family situation, their own medical issues, or a tremendously stressful and challenging job, they’re likely not the right choice. Find someone who’s willing to serve in the role. Someone who refuses to discuss death as being “too morbid” isn’t going to be a good fit for this role. Your executor has to deal with myriad financial and legal issues fairly quickly after your death, and an inability to deal with this reality won’t be helpful for your beneficiaries. Finally, pick someone who’s local(ish). The ideal choice is someone who’s close by and in frequent contact with you. If this isn’t at all possible, then find someone who’s flexible enough to fly in when needed. With the proliferation of national banks and the easy availability of document storage in the cloud, many items can be handled remotely. But don’t forget that it’s likely an executor will have to appear in your local court for probate purposes. Vasquez-Perdomo        In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that immigration enforcement officials can consider factors such as location, race, accent, language spoken and type of employment in deciding whether there is a reasonable suspicion to stop and temporarily detain an individual in order to ascertain his lawful presence in the United States. The Court also held that the challenge to the government's conduct was not properly before the federal courts on standing grounds. Consistent with the framework announced in April 2025, attorneys will have the option to: Designate a Successor Attorney: Identify a New Jersey-licensed attorney who can protect client interests in the event of the registrant’s death, disability, or incapacity Identify a Person with Knowledge: Provide contact information for someone (attorney or non-attorney) familiar with the location and access procedures for the attorney’s professional records Document the Existence and Location of a Written Succession Plan: Indicate if a written succession plan has been created and specify its location (without filing or uploading the plan). Acknowledge that No Plan Exists/Employer Responsibility: State if no succession plan currently exists; indicate if the attorney’s employer or firm is responsible for client files should the attorney become unavailable or unable to practice. This process is intended to reinforce attorneys’ professional responsibilities, encourage proactive succession planning, safeguard clients’ interests, and limit the burden that falls to attorneys’ loved ones in difficult times. It also will facilitate education and communication on this important topic. Those who are identified as successor attorneys or persons with knowledge will receive an email confirming their designation.
